If your wallet or a block explorer is showing FAILED with the reason OUT_OF_ENERGY, nothing has been lost. The transaction was rejected before it changed any balance. Your USDT is where it was. What failed is a resource check, and it takes a couple of minutes to fix.

What the error actually means

Every TRON account has two resources: Bandwidth, spent on the size of a transaction, and Energy, spent on the computation a smart contract performs. A plain TRX transfer between two ordinary addresses uses only Bandwidth. A USDT transfer does not — USDT on TRON is a TRC-20 smart contract, and calling it costs Energy.

TRON gives every account a small free Bandwidth allowance that refills daily. It gives no free Energy at all. You get Energy in exactly three ways: stake TRX for it, have someone delegate it to you, or let the network burn your TRX to cover it. When none of those covers the contract's cost, execution stops part-way and the network reverts everything with OUT_OF_ENERGY.

One detail worth knowing, because it is the part people find unfair: the Bandwidth and any TRX consumed up to the point of failure are not refunded. A failed transfer is cheap, but it is not free — which is why guessing twice costs more than getting it right once.

How much Energy a USDT transfer really needs

The number depends on one thing only: whether the address you are sending to already holds any USDT.

Writing a brand-new balance into the USDT contract costs roughly twice as much as updating one that already exists — that is the whole reason for the gap. The TRX figures follow from the Energy unit price of 100 SUN that TRON adopted in August 2025 under governance proposal #104, which halved the previous 210 SUN: multiply the Energy by 100 SUN, divide by 1,000,000, and you have the TRX the network burns.

If you cannot tell which row applies, take the larger one. Renting more Energy than you use wastes a fraction of a TRX; renting too little means the transfer fails again and you pay for the failure twice.

The three ways to fix it

1. Let the network burn your TRX

Keep enough TRX in the wallet and raise the fee limit, and the transfer goes through with no further setup. It is the simplest option and the most expensive one: about 6.5 TRX per ordinary transfer, every single time. Reasonable for one transfer you will never repeat.

2. Stake TRX for your own Energy

Freezing TRX under Stake 2.0 generates Energy that regenerates daily, so a regular sender pays nothing per transfer. The catch is capital: covering a USDT transfer a day takes a four-figure TRX stake, locked up and exposed to the TRX price. It pays off for high, steady volume and not much else.

3. Rent Energy for an hour

Rental platforms hold large staked pools and delegate Energy to your address on demand, usually within seconds, for terms from 15 minutes upward. You pay only for what you rent, nothing is locked, and no one gains any authority over your wallet — a resource delegation cannot move your funds. Fixing it, step by step

  1. Check which address is actually sending. It must be the address that holds the USDT you are moving.
  2. Decide whether you need ~65,000 or ~130,000 Energy, using the table above.
  3. Rent that Energy to the sending address, or stake, or top the wallet up with TRX and raise the fee limit.
  4. Confirm the Energy arrived. Wallets show it as an Energy balance on the account; block explorers list it under the account's resources.
  5. Re-send the transfer, and do it before the rental expires — most cheap rentals run for 15 minutes or 1 hour.

Four mistakes that cause a second failure

Paying from an exchange withdrawal. This is the most common one by a wide margin. If you buy Energy and pay by withdrawing TRX straight from an exchange, many platforms delegate the Energy to the address the payment came from — which is the exchange's hot wallet, not yours. Pay from the wallet you actually control, or use a platform that lets you name the receiving address explicitly.

Forgetting the memo. Several platforms take payment to one shared address and use the transaction memo to tell whose address the Energy is for. No memo, and the Energy goes to the payer.

Renting for the recipient instead of the sender. Energy is consumed by the account that signs the transaction. Delegating it to the person receiving the USDT does nothing.

Letting the rental expire. A one-hour rental runs for one hour from delegation, not from when you get round to sending.
